Research institutions

The Federal Government and the states (Länder) can approach the Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) at any time with a request to review one of their scientific institutions.

On this basis, the WR has reviewed a broad spectrum of institutions in recent years, predominantly from the non-university sector.

Most recently, these have included, among others:

Independent research institutes

For example (German versions only):

Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies e.V. (IASS), 2021

Sigmund Freud Institute (SFI), Frankfurt a.M., 2020

Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism e.V. (HAIT), 2020

Parts of larger research institutions

For example (German version only):

Socio-Economic Panel SOEP, Berlin, 2009

Research and cultural institutions

For example (German versions only):

Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK), Berlin, 2020

Dresden State Art Collections (SKD), 2014

Duke August Library Wolfenbüttel (HAB), 2013

German Literature Archive Marbach (DLA), 2011

Weimar Classic Foundation, 2011

The reasons for the reviews can also vary significantly. It may be a review of scientific performance, future institutional funding of an institute or inclusion in a nationally funded research network.
