Keeping a close eye on the development of university medical schools in the federal states is one of the traditional tasks of the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR). In this context, university medical school locations are regularly assessed and recommendations for their further development are published.
This provides the federal states (Länder), as well as the respective institutions themselves, with important orientation points on how they can position themselves more efficiently in the tension field between research, teaching and patient care. In its review process, the WR pays particular attention to the orientation of research and teaching, the organisational structures, the structural conditions on site and the resources of university medical schools. The inspections are either designed to cover all locations of a federal state or focus on individual departments and clinics.
In October 2019, the WR completed its review of the University Medical School of North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to a Position Statement across sites (German version only) on the further development of the University Medical School of North Rhine-Westphalia, it adopted Position Statements on all sites and proposals (German only).
