The head office’s task is to provide support to the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) to act, communicate and make decisions through its activities and services.
The organisational structure of the head office corresponds to the main areas of responsibility of the WR. The specialist departments and units coordinate and support the work of the committees and working groups of the WR in terms of planning and logistics; in particular, they are responsible for preparing the content of the WR recommendations and position statements on issues pertaining to science policy. On average, the head office supervises around 40 to 45 working groups in parallel. The WR head office, which currently has about 100 employees, is headed up by Secretary General Thomas May.
