Thomas May has been Secretary General of the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) since 1 February 2009.
Thomas May was born in Hildesheim and, after graduating from high school, studied modern history in Hamburg and Munich.
From 1987 to 1995, May worked at the German Research Foundation (DFG), first as head of the Executive Board Unit, and then as head of a unit in the Collaborative Research Centres department.

In 1995, Thomas May changed to the head office of the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR). There he headed up the Higher Education Structure and Framework Planning department for five years, after which he took over the Teaching, Studies and Young Academics department and became Deputy Secretary General.
From 2003 to 2008, May was Chancellor of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität - LMU Munich.
Thomas May has been Secretary General of the WR since 1 February 2009.
